I used to use the gym floor to play badminton or basketball with my kids on the weekend. Now I’m told it isn’t available because outside groups are renting it. Shouldn’t the military member’s needs come first? 

Absolutely, unfortunately the grant that is provided to PSP to open the gym and other facilities as been cut until the end of March. We are using the gym floor rentals to offset the loss of this funding so we can open the rest of the gym for the CF Community. Without these rentals we would have to close the gym entirely on the weekends. We hope this is only a temporary situation.

How come this piece of equipment has been broke for a while & doesn’t seem to be getting fixed?

Unfortunately our funding for maintenance was one of the grants that were recently cut for this year.

How long are these cuts expected to last?

The grant cuts are until the end of March. We are hoping the grants will be reinstated the first of April.

I just looked at the PSP Guide, why does it show longer gym hours?

Unfortunately, with any printed material, information can get outdated. There is always a lot of great material within these guides, but to get the most up to date information on schedules, please check here at the psphalifax.ca website.

Could something else within PSP have been cut besides the fitness centres?

Unfortunately, the grants that were cut were specific to the wages & maintenance for the fitness centres, arenas and Community Recreation department.

Am I going to have to go out and purchase a gym membership elsewhere so I can stay fit?

The cardio rooms and weight rooms will still be available at each fitness centre. We realize that the hours have been reduced for the gym floor, but the rental program is what allows us to keep the rest of the facility open.  Although you can not use the gym floor you still are able to stay fit utilizing other areas of the facility.

What other changes can I expect?

We are hoping that the grants will be reinstated in April. If they are not we will be reviewing all programs and services and any new changes required will be announced at that time.
